The current situation of the traditional application fields of calcined coke

The traditional application fields of calcined petroleum coke are currently in an adjustment period characterized by “a stable core foundation, but an accelerated shift between old and new growth drivers.” Simply put, its role as the “ballast stone” in the electrolytic aluminum industry remains solid, but under the polarizing influence of the steel and new energy sectors, there is also notable unevenness within the traditional fields themselves.

Prebaked Anodes: The Absolute Core, with Stable Demand

This is the most traditional and largest consumption segment for calcined petroleum coke, with a market share stable at 60% to over 75%. Electrolytic aluminum is the primary process for global aluminum production, and prebaked anodes are the “heart” of this process, with calcined petroleum coke being the key aggregate material for their manufacture.

  • Current Status: Terminal electrolytic aluminum capacity is still expanding modestly, providing a solid demand foundation for calcined petroleum coke. However, this market is already very mature, with limited growth in demand—it leans more toward steady growth rather than explosive expansion.
  • Trend: As aluminum smelters place increasing emphasis on energy efficiency and electrolytic cell stability, the market demand for calcined petroleum coke with high quality and stable specifications is growing.

Graphite Electrodes and Carburizers: Dragged Down by the Steel Industry, Demand Remains Weak

These two fields are highly correlated with the steel industry, particularly electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. Graphite electrodes are the core conductive material for EAF steelmaking, while carburizers are used to adjust the carbon content of molten steel.

  • Current Status: Due to squeezed profit margins and low operating rates among downstream steel mills, the graphite electrode and carburizer markets are generally underperforming, with corresponding reductions in demand for calcined petroleum coke. These markets have become saturated or even contracted.
  • Data: In the first half of 2025, the average operating rate of the graphite electrode industry was only 29.85%, and carburizer capacity utilization also declined year-on-year. In 2024, the consumption of calcined petroleum coke in the graphite electrode sector was only about 270,000 tons—a relatively small scale compared to traditional fields. In the future, as the proportion of EAF steelmaking increases, there may be greater use of needle coke, offering limited upside for demand for ordinary calcined petroleum coke.

Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Rapid Growth, but Viewed as a “New” Battlefield

Although anode materials are a quintessential emerging application field, their rapid development is profoundly reshaping the entire calcined petroleum coke market landscape, making them necessary to mention for a complete picture.

  • Current Status: This is the biggest highlight and growth point in the current market, driven by the boom in the new energy vehicle industry. In the first half of 2025, anode material production surged by 32.19% year-on-year, significantly boosting the consumption of calcined petroleum coke.
  • Trend: It is projected that by 2029, the share of anode materials in calcined petroleum coke consumption will rise to around 10%. It is becoming the core engine driving demand growth for calcined petroleum coke and is also a key factor causing the market’s polarization—behind the boom in the new energy sector lies the sluggishness in the traditional steel-related fields.
