Small peak of local refinery maintenance and repair Did domestic petcoke production drop sharply in July?

In July, the mainland refinery ushered in the second small peak of maintenance during the year. The production of petroleum coke in the local refinery fell by 9% from the previous month. However, the peak of the main refinery’s delayed coking unit maintenance has passed, and the main petroleum coke production has basically remained stable. So how much did the domestic pet coke change in July?

The total domestic petroleum coke production in July 2021 was approximately 2.26 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.83% and a month-on-month decrease of 0.9%. Since mid-July, although the local refining delayed coking unit has been overhauled and the operating rate of the delayed coking unit has been maintained below 60%, the operating rate of the delayed coking unit in the main refinery has basically returned to a normal level since this month. Maintained at more than 67%, especially Sinopec and CNOOC Limited this month’s delayed coking unit operating rate maintained at more than 70%, so the overall decline in petroleum coke production in the country is not much.

In terms of low-sulfur coke, the output of petroleum coke with a sulfur content of less than 1.0% declined in July. Among them, the decrease in the output of 1# coke was mainly due to the overhaul or reduction in output of the refinery. The decrease in 2A petroleum coke production is mainly reflected in the local refineries and CNOOC. On the one hand, the delayed coking unit of the refinery has been overhauled, and on the other hand, the low-sulfur coke refining part has increased, resulting in a decline in the output of 2A petroleum coke. In addition, Zhoushan Petrochemical was affected by the typhoon “fireworks”, and there was a slight reduction in production in July. The overall output of 2B petroleum coke in July did not change much. Although some refineries were overhauled, some land refineries were converted to 2B, so the overall 2B output remained basically stable.

In terms of medium-sulfur coke, the production of 3A and 3B petroleum coke both increased. Among them, the production of 3A petroleum coke increased by 58.92% month-on-month, and the production of 3B petroleum coke increased by 9.8% month-on-month. The changes in its output are mainly reflected in the changes in the start-up and shutdown of the local refining delayed coking unit and the recent conversion of petroleum coke indicators caused by the low sulfide of the refining raw materials. The output of 3C petroleum coke decreased by 19.26% from the previous month, mainly due to the shutdown and overhaul of the local refinery’s delayed coking unit.

In terms of high-sulfur coke, the output of 4A petroleum coke decreased significantly in July, down 25.54% month-on-month. The change in its output was mainly due to changes in local refinery petroleum coke models. The output of 4B and 5# petroleum coke basically remained stable with limited changes.

On the whole, although the output of petroleum coke from local refineries dropped significantly in July, the output of petroleum coke from the main refineries was acceptable, and the total supply of domestic petroleum coke did not change much. In addition, the small peak of the local refining’s delayed coking plant shutdown will continue until the end of August. Some of the refineries are not normally shut down for maintenance, and the start time has not been fixed. Therefore, the decline in petroleum coke production in August will remain at a relatively low level. .
