Why the Tank Furnace Process Has an Irreplaceable Advantage in Processing High-Volatile Green Coke

The core reason why the tank furnace process has an irreplaceable advantage in processing high-volatile green coke lies in its unique capabilities of “turning waste into treasure” and “precise control.” It transforms the potential challenge of high volatile content into a major process advantage, enabling efficient, economical, and stable production.

Specifically, this advantage is reflected in the following three aspects:

Turning Waste into Treasure: Using Volatiles as the Primary Fuel

This is the tank furnace’s most core advantage. For green petroleum coke with high volatile content (typically above 12%), the indirect heating structure of the tank furnace allows the volatiles released during heating to be collected through dedicated channels and directed into the flues for combustion as fuel.

  • Near-Zero External Fuel Consumption: This means that when processing high-volatile green coke, the furnace can rely entirely on the volatiles released from the coke itself for heating, with external fuel consumption approaching zero. This not only significantly reduces energy costs but also transforms volatiles from a “waste gas” that needs treatment into a valuable “fuel.”
  • Significant Economic and Environmental Benefits: Practical applications demonstrate that this utilization method yields substantial economic returns. For example, one project that adopted tank furnaces achieved annual savings of 500,000 standard cubic meters of natural gas and a reduction in carbon emissions of 13,400 tons.

Precise Control: Ensuring Stable Operation Under High-Volatile Conditions

When high-volatile green coke is heated, the large and concentrated release of volatiles can easily cause abnormal pressure inside the tank, material coking and blockage, and even safety incidents such as “blowouts” or “explosions” in the lower sections. The tank furnace has a well-established system to address these challenges:

  • Flexible Process Adjustment Methods: Modern tank furnace technology can broaden the adaptable volatile range of raw materials to 7.5%–12% through premix stable combustion technology. Additionally, a calcined material recirculation process can be employed, where a portion of already-calcined coke is mixed with green coke to precisely control the overall volatile content of the feed, fundamentally ensuring safety.
  • Multi-Parameter Coordinated Control: Research has proven that by raising flue temperatures, adjusting particle size, and controlling discharge rates, the pressure field inside the tank can be effectively regulated, guiding volatiles to escape upward in an orderly manner and preventing them from migrating downward and causing accidents.

Quality Assurance: Producing High-Quality Calcined Coke

Compared to other calcining equipment, the tank furnace better ensures the quality of the final product when processing high-volatile raw materials.

  • Low Carbon Loss: Due to indirect heating, the material does not come into direct contact with flames or oxygen-containing flue gases, resulting in very low carbon loss, typically controllable below 4%. This means more valuable carbon is retained, improving the yield rate.
  • Stable Calcination Quality: Through precise flue temperature control and a stable material residence time, the tank furnace ensures that the green coke undergoes a complete rearrangement of its coking structure in the high-temperature zone of 1200–1300°C, thereby obtaining calcined coke with excellent true density, electrical conductivity, and other performance indicators, along with stable quality.

In short, what might be a troublesome issue for other furnace types—high volatile content—becomes a key resource for energy savings and stable production in the tank furnace. This is the core reason for its irreplaceable advantage.
